DIY :: Tin Cans Tied to Car Bumper :: Wedding, Birthday, Baby Shower & Graduation Parade Car Decoration Ideas

:: Here’s What You’ll Need ::

Various Types of Cans in Various Sizes (About 20)
Dishwashing Soap
Nail/Screw
Hammer
Spray Paint (your color/colors of choice)
Fishing String
Washer
Tape
Newspaper/Large Paper
Scissors
Measuring Tape

:: Here’s What To Do ::

Save all kinds and types of cans in various sizes. The more variety you have the better the sounds it will make. (The very large can pictured we used as a drum with a wood stick to make more noise during the drive by parade.) Peel off all the packaging labels.

Place the cans in the sink with warm soapy water to make sure they are completely clean and free of any oils and/or food.

Using a nail/screw and hammer, make a very small hole in the center of the can.

It should look like this…

Continue to do the same for the remainder of the cans.

Place a newspaper/large paper on the floor outside and tape in place. (Please be cautious of the area in which you will be doing this project, as spray paint can land in the surrounding areas.) Arrange all the cans on top, making sure they are separated from one another to allow the spray paint to be applied evenly.

Spray paint the top and sides of all the cans and allow to fully dry.

Lift the cans so that they are now slightly in a new location (to prevent them from further sticking to the paper). Apply a second coat of spray paint. Allow to completely dry.

Once dry, gather the fishing string and scissors for the next steps.

:: Drive by Graduation Ideas :: Getaway Car Decorations ::

Arrange the painted cans in a pattern that works for you. I put large, small, large, small, as well as incorporating different types in between as well. See below:

Work with one row at a time. I started with the bottom row.

Measure from the bumper of your car (where you will tie them) to the floor to figure out how much fishing string you will need to leave at the top of the cans. Make sure the first can in each row is touching the floor.

Thread the fishing string through the hole of the last can and tie a washer to it (to prevent it from slipping through the hole).

For the remainder of the cans, tie a loop (as shown) in between each of the cans of the row.

Continue to do the same with the remaining rows.

Once they are all completed, lie them down on the floor and arrange them how you would like. Place a piece of tape to keep them all together.

For storage purposes (until the event day), I took off one of my paintings and hung them to avoid them from tangling.

Tie the cans to your bumper once you arrive to your event or arrive close to their house. We used these cans for a birthday and 2 graduation drive by celebrations!

You can decorate your car and honk, but this ongoing sound of clanking tin cans does sound like music to your ears! Click to watch the video and hear them in action!
