Using an X-Acto knife, unstitch the top part of a softball/baseball. Make sure to tie up the remaining threads to prevent them from further unraveling. Take out the ball. Add some dirt and your plant!

I’m going to give this a try! I’m in charge of senior gifts for next year and need to get started! I’ve seen these but you’re the first one I found with a ‘how to’. Much appreciated!!
Love this!!! I have removed ball covers before for embroidering and put back together with little problems....but to put a plant in...is just too cute!!!! I might have to combine the two ideas! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! It makes this blog all worth it!
Made four of these for our coaches for our softball banquet. Came out great! Everyone raved over them. I used champion balls that do have glue in the inside which makes it a little harder to get the ball out of the leather cover. I used a nail file to separate the glue from the cover and had an easier time rolling the leather off the ball.
So happy to hear that! And thanks for the tip!
This is pretty cool im gonna try it for a gift to our team mom
Awesome! Feel free to share you pic!
How do you take out the inside of the ball? I've tried a softball and a baseball, and both have the skin glued on. There's no way to remove it and keep it intact to make a planter.
It must be the type/quality of ball. If you look at the picture, that's the brand I happened to have to do this project...the stitching comes off easily and the ball inside pops right out. Sorry to hear that yours didn't work, perhaps you could share your brand so others are aware of it. Hope you get to do it;)
yes please share what brands have the skin glued on!
Do these drain properly when watered?
I would suggest you make/drill holes on the bottom of the ball to properly drain.
Yes! This is an awesome idea. I like the little 'lid' as well, that could be used for writing labels on, or even naming your plants if you are weird like me, hahah :)
LOL! That IS funny!! I'm sure they're great listeners:) ....I LOVE that idea of writing on the 'lid' ...thanks for sharing!
