Looking for fun luau party ideas for teens, young adults or adults? A tropical party theme gives you so many ways to get creative—from colorful food and tropical drinks to party games, photo booths, decorations and plenty of little details that bring everything together.
Here are some of my favorite luau party ideas, including easy food options, two different DIY photo booth setups, tropical party games and activities and other fun decorative ideas you can mix and match to create your own backyard luau, Hawaiian-themed birthday party or tropical celebration.
Take what you like, change what you don’t and make it your own!
Start the party at the entrance and give guests a little taste of the tropical fun before they even step inside! A few simple decorations can completely transform the space and instantly set the mood for a luau or Hawaiian-themed party.
I used the Margaritaville LED flame light speakers at the entrance with a welcome mat as it played Hawaiian themed songs as they entered. Then placed traditional authentic outdoor tiki torches filled with citronella along with a very colorful tropical flower garland along the fence, to create a fun entrance that felt festive without being overdone. The tiki torches added that perfect backyard luau feel, while the bright flowers brought in plenty of color and made the entrance feel like part of the party–not just the way in.
You can easily recreate the look with a few affordable decorations and adjust it to fit your space, whether you’re decorating a front walkway, backyard gate, patio entrance or doorway. Depending on your set up, time, space, etc. you can set up an area in the entrance where you hand out leis and tropical drinks.
I divided the party into different areas so everything felt fun, organized and easy for guests to enjoy. The food and drink tables were filled with colorful serving pieces, tropical flowers and palm leaves, along with luau-inspired snacks and decorations. A separate photo area included fun props to wear, while games and activities were set up nearby to keep everyone entertained. Small touches such as tiki torches, leis, and luau decorations helped connect each area and carry the theme throughout the entire party. Don’t forget the bathroom—even a few leis, flowers or palm leaves can help continue the luau theme in a space guests might not expect.
To create this backdrop, I made a custom Happy Birthday sign using the felt lettering, a 22 × 28-inch white poster board, and artificial palm leaves. You can also use foam board for a sturdier sign. Once it was finished, I punched two small holes along the sides and tied it to the grid behind the artificial ivy wall. I then layered the colorful tropical flower garland twice across the top for a fuller look.

For the pineapple centerpieces, we dressed up whole pineapples with colorful artificial hibiscus flowers, fun sunglasses, and leafy green leis around the base. (The leafy green leis in the picture are from Dollar Tree, so if you’re planning your party during the summer, you might find them there, along with other stuff. Just in case, these similar green leaf leis are also available on Amazon.) Each pineapple had its own little personality, so no two looked exactly alike. The bright flowers and oversized sunglasses gave the tables a playful tropical feel without needing anything complicated or expensive.
We placed them on large tropical leaves, which helped pull the whole luau table setting together and made the pineapples stand out even more.
For our second centerpiece, we turned a coconut into a little tropical flower vase and filled it with colorful blooms in shades of pink, orange, and white.
Then we placed the coconut on a small wood slice and surrounded it with a leafy green lei to tie it in with the rest of the table decor. Simple, tropical, and honestly one of my favorite little details from the party.
BLUE HAWAIIAN RECIPE:
Mix 1 cup white rum, 1 cup blue curaçao, 4 cups pineapple juice and 1 cup cream of coconut in a large pitcher. Stir well and chill before serving.
MALIBU BAY RECIPE:
Mix 2 cups Malibu coconut rum, 4 cups pineapple juice and 2 cups cranberry juice in a large pitcher. Stir and serve chilled or over ice.
I also served piña coladas in both alcoholic and virgin versions.
PINA COLADA RECIPE:
Mix 6 oz. pineapple juice, 3 oz. cream of coconut, 4 oz. white rum, and ice. Blend until smooth and creamy. For virgin version, omit the rum.
Set out colorful cups, mini shot glasses, bamboo straws, mini umbrellas (traditional and hibiscus), flamingo stirrers, maraschino cherries and fresh pineapple so guests can dress up their drinks. Don’t forget the cocktail napkins and a Sharpie so everyone can write their name on their cup!
A cooler stocked with water, coconut water, sodas and iced tea gave everyone plenty of other options too.
Colorful fruit skewers are easy to grab, easy to eat and perfect for a luau party. Use a mix of pineapple, strawberries, grapes, melon and other favorites.
Fill small cups with sliced vegetables and a little ranch dressing at the bottom. They are simple, mess-free and easy for guests to carry around.
A charcuterie board filled with meats, cheeses, crackers, fruit and other bite-size snacks gives guests plenty to choose from—and it looks great on the party table.
Serve mango salsa inside a hollowed-out pineapple for an easy tropical presentation. Add a bowl of Tostitos nearby for dipping.
Heat Aldi’s prepared barbecue pulled pork according to the package directions. Spoon it onto Hawaiian rolls and top with small chopped pineapple pieces. It’s sweet, smoky and incredibly easy to put together! (Tip: Assemble these when you’re ready to serve them. Make sure you slice the Hawaiian rolls more towards the top, so the bottom bread doesn’t get soggy.)
Thread teriyaki chicken (I used Perdue Ready to Eat Short Cuts Grilled Chicken and Kikkoman Teriyaki sauce), pineapples and mozzarella pearls onto small skewers for a sweet-and-savory party appetizer that fits the tropical theme perfectly.
Layer sliced ham and Swiss cheese inside Hawaiian rolls, then brush the tops with a mixture of ¼ cup melted butter, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. Bake covered at 350°F for 10 minutes, then uncover and bake for another 5 minutes until warm, melty and golden. These easy sweet-and-savory sliders are always a party favorite!
Turn Ferrero Rocher chocolates into mini pineapples by adding leafy pineapple-top toothpicks. They make an easy treat and a cute addition to the table. See steps below.
She’s been swaying on dashboards for decades—now she’s taking center stage on the birthday cake! As the cake makes its entrance, the classic hula girl dances right along, bringing a little island nostalgia and plenty of personality to the celebration.
We chose a Nothing Bundt Cakes Bundt Cake for one option and the Crazy for Crunchies Carvel Ice Cream Cake for the other.
Finish either cake with numbered birthday candles or tall, thin candles for a fun, festive look.
To set up the station, I printed the “Snap It, Sign It, Drop It In” and “Proof You Were Here” signs and cut them out (download link below). I attached the instruction sign to the front of the keepsake box with artificial palm leaves behind it. For the top sign, I glued it to a bamboo stick so it would stand upright and remain sturdy, then decorated it with artificial palm leaves and a hibiscus flower.
I covered the table with a tropical grass table skirt and arranged the decorated box, Polaroid camera, and markers on top. Guests could take a photo, write a short message on the white border, and drop it into the keepsake box. It was a fun photo booth activity and an easy way to collect candid pictures and messages from the party.
I attached LED string lights diagonally across the window to create descending rows for displaying Polaroid photos. I used small pieces of removable tacky putty wherever the lights met the window trim to hold them securely in place. To hide the putty and add to the luau theme, I placed colorful artificial hibiscus flowers over each attachment point.
Below the display, I set up a small table with the “Leave your mark” sign (download link below), along with the Polaroid camera and markers for signing their photos. Throughout the party, guests took pictures, added a message, and clipped their Polaroids onto the lights using the mini clothespins, creating a personalized photo display that also served as party décor.
Welcome guests with a fun dress-up station stocked with colorful flower leis, plastic leis, sunglasses, and grass skirts so everyone can get into the luau spirit the moment they arrive! Simply place everything in a large basket or suitcase for guests to grab their favorites. Not only does it make for a festive first impression, but it also adds a pop of color to your party and makes photos even more memorable. Plus, these accessories double as fun party favors that guests can wear throughout the celebration and take home afterward.
Print the sign on cardstock, trim it to size, and place it in a 5×7 frame. Display it beside the leis, sunglasses, and grass skirts as a fun reminder for guests to dress the part. I set this station up next to the photo area so the accessories could make the pictures more playful and keep everything on theme.
Set up a creative station where guests can design their own tiki coconut to take home! Display the instruction sign so everyone knows how the activity works, then provide a basket of coconuts along with oil-based paint markers. Unlike regular paint pens, oil-based markers adhere to the rough coconut shell and create a permanent design that won’t rub off once dry. (TIP: Oil-based markers are permanent—cover your table and supervise younger children.)
Be sure to remind guests to press the marker tip a few times before using it to start the paint flow. Once they’ve finished creating their tiki face, have a designated drying area where the coconuts can sit undisturbed until the paint is completely dry. It’s a fun, hands-on activity that doubles as a personalized party favor and keepsake from the luau.

The Volcano Bowl is a fast-paced card game filled with rules, questions, challenges and plenty of laughs. Some cards tell players to drink, choose someone else to drink or complete a dare. As the game continues, different drinks are added to the volcano bowl, creating a pretty questionable final mixture for one unlucky player to drink!
Although it is traditionally played as a drinking game, it can easily be made nonalcoholic with sodas, juices or other drinks. The real fun is watching the final “volcano” mixture come together—and seeing who ends up having to try it.
For the setup, I printed the game instructions, trimmed them and placed them in a 5 × 7 frame so guests could easily reference the card meanings. I placed a deck of cards beside the sign and made the volcano centerpiece using a small Dollar Tree bowl. A piece of floral foam raised a battery-operated tea light inside the bowl, and a palm leaf disguised the setup while allowing the warm glow to shine through. Turn it on after dark for the full volcano effect—or use a ready-made scorpion bowl for an upgraded version.

A piñata may seem like a kids’ party activity, but teens and young adults still love the chance to feel like kids again. After all, when was the last time they got to hit a piñata?
Instead of filling it with only candy and adding the usual luau piñata fillers, I added $5 Menchie’s gift cards, tropical candies, shell bracelets and funny gag gifts such as fart spray and fake cockroaches. It brought plenty of laughs and unexpected fun to the party!
(If you’re not doing the piñata, then you can do a tropical candy bar instead.)
Beer pong is always an easy way to get a little friendly competition going. Set up cups on each end of the table, divide everyone into teams and take turns trying to land the ping pong ball/table tennis ball in the opposing team’s cups. It can be played with beer, another drink or a completely nonalcoholic option.
Limbo is another classic party game that teens and young adults are never too old to enjoy. Turn up the music, lower the bar after each round and see how low everyone can go. It was simple to set up and brought plenty of laughs, cheering and friendly competition to the party. The winner received a $25 gift card in a decorated festive tropical cup filled with tropical candies. (I found mine at the Dollar Tree but here are some, in case they are not in season.)
